• Where do you think this is?
  • When is this? (What time of year/day?)
  • What is the woman doing?
  • Who carved the heart into the tree? Why did they do it? Why this tree?
  • Why is she touching it?
  • Why is this picture called ‘Memories’?
  • What is she remembering?
  • How does she feel?

Gwen was at home, working, again. She came across a flashback in her mind as she stood up in surprise. Bonnie, Gwen’s dog, barked loudly and stamped her foot, almost like she demanded for a walk. Gwen grabbed her coat and scarf and wrapped it around her neck that was underneath miles of long, blond hair. She tapped her left hand on her thigh with a treat in the other, waiting for Bonnie to stop climbing on the kitchen counters and searching for her food.
On their way, the two decided to go on their long walk, through the forest. Gwen was confused at this flashback that she had seen randomly. Bonnie was excited on this walk because she loved the snow that had fallen very calmly that same morning. Gwen, however felt very unhappy, she didn’t know exactly why, and there was rhyme or reason why she was so sad when, before herself, was the most beautiful view her eyes had ever captured. She suddenly stopped, stared, then looked down at the ground, whilst Bonnie squiggled out of her harness and off her lead… off she went. Gwen jumped and ran after her for miles, but Bonnie was too fast. Gwen knew she would get her back, but for now she removed her scarf, making her hair go all static, and walked off with her head placed down in her chest.
Whilst walking back through the forest, with snowdrops falling onto her head, Gwen had no idea how unusual her life would be without her little friend. She reached in her pocket for a chocolate coin, but instead found a smelly dog treat laying in the depth of her coat. Gwen came across a tree with a heart engraved in it, now you don’t see that often. Then she remembered the flashback again, then another, then another. This day was so confusing. When Gwen got home she lay down on the sofa, with her coat still on and legs crossed. She looked back on today and realised she needed to get Bonnie back. Her life was too weird to not have a dog to help her.

A lovely piece, my ‘Anonymous’ Y6! Will she be reunited with Bonnie? I hope so.
