Morituri Nolumus Mori

Paul Kidby Astronauts from The Last Hero

  • Who are these men?
  • What do they do? How do you know?
  • What do you think they are going to do?
  • How are they feeling?
  • The words behind them (written in Latin) say ‘morituri nolumus mori’, which means ‘We who are about to die don’t want to’. What is their story? Why are they about to die? What mission are they being sent on? Who is sending them? Can they refuse?

Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, rightful king of Ankh-Morpork but content to be a city watchman, inventor and painter Leonard of Quirm, and hapless wizard Rincewind of Unseen University. They’re on a mission from Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, to swing a ship under the Disc (their world is a flat disc on the back of 4 elephants which stand on the back of the great turtle A’tuin) and use the force of their passage to come up over the other side of the rim and glide down to Cori Celesti to stop Cohen the Barbarian from returning fire to the gods. They could refuse to do it, but it would mean the end of the world.
